The jailed former Delta State governor, James Ibori, lost a legal appeal on Thursday against a 13-year prison sentence for embezzling more than $250 million. He was trying to reduce his jail term. Ibori’s legal team had based its argument for a reduction in his jail term sentence on some a promise by Justice Pitts that he could sentence Ibori to a jail term of not more than 10 years if he pleaded guilty to the charges filed against him. However, the Court of Appeal dismissed the argument, saying the promise was not emphatic enough to support the plea.Judge Antony Edwards-Stuart rejected saying Money Laundering should attract a maximum of 14 years in jail. Mr Ibori pleaded guilty to 10 charges of fraud and money-laundering in February 2012 while most of the fraud were in Nigeria, some money passed through Britain and British banks. James Ibori is the most prominent Nigerian politician to be successfully prosecuted for corruption
