Nigeria’s literary icon and publisher of several novels, Chinua Achebe, is dead. Achebe, 83, died in the United State where he was said to have suffered from an undisclosed ailment. He died last night in a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, United States.
A source close to the family said the professor had been ill for a while and was hospitalised in an undisclosed hospital in Boston.
The source declined to provide further details, saying the family would issue a statement on the development later today.
Contacted, spokesperson for Brown University, where Mr. Achebe worked until he took ill, Darlene Trewcrist, is yet to respond to our enquiries on the professor’s condition.
Until his death, the renowned author of Things Fall Apart was the David and Marianna Fisher University Professor and Professor of Africana Studies at Brown.
The University described him as “known the world over for having played a seminal role in the founding and development of African literature.”
“Achebe’s global significance lies not only in his talent and recognition as a writer, but also as a critical thinker and essayist who has written extensively on questions of the role of culture in Africa and the social and political significance of aesthetics and analysis of the postcolonial state in Africa,” Brown University writes of the literary icon.
Mr. Achebe was the author of Things Fall Apart, published in 1958, and considered the most widely read book in modern African Literature. The book sold over 12 million copies and has been translated to over 50 languages worldwide.
Many of his other novels, including Arrow of God, No Longer at Ease, Anthills of the Savannah, and A man of the People, were equally influential as well.
Prof Achebe was born in Ogidi, Anambra State in 1930 and attended St Philips’ Central School at the age of six. He moved away from his family to Nekede, four kilometres from Owerri, the capital of Imo State at the age of 12 and registered at the Central School there.
He attended Government College Umuahia for his secondary school education. He was a pioneer student of the University College, now University of Ibadan in 1948. He was first admitted to study medicine but changed to English, history and theology after his first year.
While studying at Ibadan, Achebe began to become critical of European literature about Africa. He eventually wrote his final papers in the University in 1953 and emerged with a second-class degree.
Prof Achebe taught for a while after graduation before joining the Nigeria Broadcast Service in 1954 in Lagos.
While in Lagos with the Broadcast Service, Achebe met Christie Okoli, who later became his wife; they got married in 1961. The couple had four children.
He also played a major role during the Nigeria Civil War where he joined the Biafran Government as an ambassador.
His latest book, There Was a Country, was an autobiography on his experiences and views of the civil war. The latest book was probably the most criticised of his writings especially by Nigerians, with many arguing that the professor did not write a balanced account and wrote more as a Biafran than as a Nigerian. Mr. Achebe was a regular critic of various military dictators that ruled Nigeria and loud voice in denouncing the failure of governance in the country. He twice rejected offers by the Nigerian government to grant him a national honour citing the deplorable political situations in the country, particularly in his home state, Anambra, as reason.

Cars with tinted windows would be seized by the Police
Driving in Lagos with tinted windows is against the law but some people do it because they get away with it. But not anymore says the Inspector General of police. He has directed state commissioners of police to start seizing cars with tinted windows and prosecute the car owners henceforth .
The directive is contained in a statement issued by Frank Mba, the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, today in Abuja
“Police Officers nationwide have been directed to commence a massive operation aimed at enforcing all existing laws bordering on tinted glasses and the use of unregistered/unlicensed vehicles. This unbecoming attitude has the capacity not only to heighten criminal activities but to place unnecessary pressure on security agencies and law abiding citizens
The IG wishes to remind Nigerians from all walks of life, including politicians, military and security personnel that the ban on unlawful and indiscriminate use of tinted glasses and legislation forbidding the plying of unregistered vehicles are still in force. He wishes to clearly state that the Nigeria Police will no longer tolerate few misguided Nigerians who abuse the use of tinted glasses and unregistered/unlicensed vehicles. Similarly, owners of unregistered/unlicensed vehicles are advised to immediately register them and obtain appropriate licences or withdraw them forthwith from public roads,” the statement read

Alamieyeseigha’s Pardon: Soyinka Speaks At Last
Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has eventually spoken out on the state pardon granted to former governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, by President Goodluck Jonathan’s government. The Nobel Laureate described it as an act of impunity and a symbol of corrupt mentality.
Soyinka made this known in Lagos on Wednesday during a programme ushering in the Lagos Black Heritage Festival. He lent his voice to those of civil society groups, international community and individuals who had vehemently condemned the President’s action.
Also, on the statement made by the Special Adviser to President Jonathan on Media, Dr. Reuben Abati, who had, on a TV programme, described those who are criticising Jonathan over the matter as suffering from “sophisticated ignorance”, Soyinka said he did not mind being called such a name for bearing his mind on the state pardon.
Therefore, Soyinka insists that: “On the state pardon granted the former governor, I want to join the bandwagon of the ignorant persons. I am happy to be counted among them. For me, this kind of impunity is not unconnected to the controversy, which has been surrounding the N4bn allocation being sought by the First Lady Mission. It is part of the same corrupt mentality,” he said. He also added that it was also disappointing that some ministers had given contradictory interpretations to the object of the pardon.
Soyinka said it was not right for Jonathan to lump Alamieyeseigha’s case with those of the other people granted pardon alongside him. According to him, the cases of other ex-convicts were largely political, as evident in the antics of the late Sanni Abacha junta that implicated them in a controversial coup.
His words: “What is going on right now gives the picture of a government that is floundering and justifying the unjustifiable. It amounts to encouragement of corruption. The felon is wanted by the United States Government. We have a case of an officer of the law – a governor – who went to another country and broke the law of the nation. He jumped bail.
“I believe that such a person does not deserve a state pardon. So, I have joined the league of the ignorant persons condemning the act. I criticise and deplore President Jonathan for granting pardon to the former governor.”

Twitter Celebrates 7th year
Twitter, or Twttr as it was known at the time, came to life on March 21, 2006, when co-founder
Jack Dorsey posted the first ever tweet: "just setting up my twttr".
In the seven years since that tweet, more than 200 million people have joined Twitter and the service now sees 400 million tweets sent every day.
George Osborne yesterday became the latest high profile person to join Twitter, signing up a few hours before delivering his Budget statement. There was even a Twitter reference during in the House of Commons, with Ed Miliband offering a hashtag joke in his response."
"Today the chancellor joined Twitter," the Labour leader said. "He could have got it all into 140 characters: Growth down, borrowing up, families hit, and millionaires laughing all the way to the bank. Hashtag downgraded chancellor."
According to a survey published earlier this week, the most popular topic to tweet about is television, with 40 per cent of evening tweets concerning what is on television. The findings, from TV Licensing's TeleScope survey, were similar to those of a Brandwatch study last week, which found that women talk more on Twitter about personal matters, television and work, while men are more likely to tweet about sport gaming and news.
Overall, according to Brandwatch, television is the most popular topic for tweets, followed by sport, music and celebrities.
To mark its seventh birthday, Twitter asked celebrity users what they liked best about the service. Here is a selection of the responses:
Richard Branson: "To me, Twitter means a way to communicate with people in real-time, highlight good causes and - above all – have fun!"
Sarah Millican: "It's always there. A link to the world. To tell me which celebs have died or show me a video of a monkey on a pig. Friends & fans alike."
Sarah Beeny: "Twitter is the home of witty, warm, welcoming and useful banter - it's an amazing place to be!"
Alastair Campbell: "I like twitter because it enables people to create their own media landscape. I hope it does not become too commercial."
Derren Brown: "Twitter provides a cross section of the population with its madness and extremes in tact. Fascinating & exhausting."

DG--"We are not increasing NYSC monthly allowance. Its a rumor"
Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Brigadier General Nnamdi Okore Affia yesterday said there is no plan by the Federal Government to increase corps members’ monthly allowance. Addressing the 2013 Batch A corp members deployed to Katsina State, General Affia said “to be honest with you there is no plan to increase your monthly allowance; all you have heard is nothing but rumours.”
“If there is such plan I must be the first person to know but as far as I am concerned there is no official plan to increase your allowance; even if the plan is on the pipeline, it has not reach my level. Your monthly allowance is still N19, 800,” said. He urged the corps members to respect the religion and culture of their host community, saying “you should understand very well the dos and don’ts of your host community.”Earlier, Katsina director of NYSC Mr E O Afolalu said a total of 1, 917 corps members have been registered in Katsina as 2013 Batch A.

#Photo:: Obama's Limo breaks down in Israel.
Barack Obama's limo, nicknamed "The Beast,' stalled on Wednesday after it's driver was supposed to pick up the president at Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion Airport in Israel but never made it there. The president is visiting the country to meet with Palestinian and Israeli leaders reports CNN.
The custom 9-ton, $1.5 million, practically indestructible stretch Caddie is 18 feet long and boasts military-grade armor plating, super thick bullet-proof glass windows, Boeing 757-type weighted doors, a reinforced steel chassis that is impenetrable by bombs or grenades and is equipped with night vision cameras, pump-action shotguns, tear gas cannons and bottles of the president's blood in case he needs a transfusion.
'The Beast' was scheduled to arrive at the airport at around 10 am and the president was set to land at noon. The vehicle which was shipped over from Washington D.C. to Israel for the president's visit was unable to start after the driver reportedly, fueled the diesel-only limo with regular gasoline.
A spokesman for the Secret Service however, refuted the rumors swirling around 'The Beast's latest breakdown by stating, that the limo had unspecified mechanical problems which are still under investigation. "The appropriate gas was put in the car,” Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan told CNN. Even though the Secret Service are extremely tight-lipped about any specifics pertaining to the presidential limo, Donovan contends that the limo actually runs on gasoline.
