Vice-Chancellor of the Redeemer’s University, Mowe, Prof. Debo Adeyewa,
The Vice-Chancellor of the Redeemer’s University, Mowe, Ogun State, Prof. Debo Adeyewa, has dismissed the purported recall of 28 expelled students of the university as “untrue and a distortion of facts.”
Reports said that 28 students of the university, which is owned by the Redeemed Christian Church of God, were expelled for testing positive to drug use.
But the VC, in an interview with Saturday PUNCH on Thursday, put the total number of students affected at 21 and not 28.
He said an appeal process was still ongoing and therefore, there was no issue of anyone being recalled.
He said, “There is a lot of misinformation and distortion of facts on this issue. What we have done is an internal process that was mismanaged by some persons. It is not true, we didn’t expel 28 students.
“Actually, there was a number of students who went through an investigation, at the end of which 21 of them were questioned and sanctioned.
“What we did was that we called the parents and briefed them because there were a number of the students who were caught in drug consumption.
“This university has a high standard academically, morally and spiritually; we are training the total man and we do not condone any form of indiscipline.”
He said as a university, RUN believes in due process and would not toy with the lives of its students.
He said, “What we did was to investigate and after a thorough investigation, some actions were taken, not as it was widely reported. However, in our system, we believe in due process. It was reported that they were tested without being aware. That is a lie.
“This is a university, where we believe in due process. These students were told when they were going for the test that they were being tested for drug consumption.
“What they did was just a urine test. After this, we invited the parents and informed them and we deliberated on what could be done.
The VC said some of the students owned up while others did not. He said since the appeal process was still ongoing, it would be too early to put a figure to those expelled.
