NIKE talking with Manchester United over funding Ronaldo's deal

Manchester United have turned to American sports giant Nike in a bid to help them sign Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese winger is rumoured to be looking for a way out of the Bernabeu, and with United unsure if they could afford his return, Old Trafford chiefs discussed a possible deal with Nike in a meeting on Friday, The Sun reports.
The kit manufacturer are keen to extend their existing equipment deal with the Red Devils that expires in 2015, and by agreeing to up their £320million deal they could assist United in bringing back the player they sold for over £80million nearly four years ago.
Ronaldo's current club Real Madrid are locked into a long-term, high-value deal with German sports company Adidas, something which weakens Nike and Ronaldo's grip on the merchandise market.
With Adidas-sponsored Lionel Messi playing at a Nike-endorsed Barcelona, moving Ronaldo to Old Trafford could help them usurp the Argentine in marketing terms, paying back any initial investment required to bring him back to Manchester.
The 28 year-old has two years left on his contract at the Bernabeu but has turned down a new deal and Madrid could be tempted to cash in before his value starts to plummet.
